Winners of the 2nd Award For a World Without Garbage
The Circular Economy is on the radar of young Brazilian researchers! In this second edition of the Por Um Mundo Sem Lixo Award, held by Movimento Circular in partnership with FEBRACE (Brazilian Science and Engineering Fair), 72 projects were identified, among the fair's finalists, that somehow address the issue of circularity in their solutions. The three best works come from schools in Rio Grande do Sul, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte, in addition to an honorable mention for a student from Rio de Janeiro.
For the award, Circular Movement identifies - among the finalists of the current edition of Febrace - those projects that dialogue directly with the principles of Circular Economy. Each of them is evaluated according to the criteria of relevance to the local community, suitability to the topic, originality, innovation, power to transform the territory and feasibility of implementation. The awarded projects win a course on Circular Economy, in addition to mentoring with experts for the 1st prize winner.
The partnership combines the educational vocation of the Circular Movement with the creative potential of the largest Brazilian pre-university Science and Engineering Fair and has highlighted the interest of students in creating solutions for a more circular world. "The principles of circularity are present in a relevant percentage of FEBRACE's finalist works. This year, the project ranked first makes direct mention to Circular Economy, showing that students have considered the topic as the agenda of their studies", evaluates Vinicius Saraceni, Circular Movement Coordinator.
"In all the projects evaluated, the students' creativity and vision of the future draw attention. Their scientific thinking and, above all, their concern with creating solutions to real-world problems considering the precepts of the circular economy. This shows the relevance and potential of the theme for education”, highlights professor Dr. Edson Grandisoli, evaluator of the finalist projects and educational coordinator of the Circular Movement.

What is Febrace?
The Brazilian Science and Engineering Fair is a major exhibition of scientific and technological projects, held since 2003, at the University of São Paulo (USP), which brings together students from all over Brazil. Its objective is to highlight talents in science and engineering and encourage scientific culture, investigative knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship in young people and educators in basic and technical education areas.
WHAT IS CIRCULAR ECONOMY?
The Circular Economy proposes a new look at our way of producing, consuming, and disposing, in order to optimize the planet's resources and generate less and less waste. In other words, an alternative model to the Linear Economy - to extract, produce, use and discard - which has proved to be increasingly unsustainable throughout history. In the Circular Economy, the goal is to keep materials in circulation longer by reusing them until nothing becomes waste! For this model to become a reality, we all have a role to play. It is a true collaborative circle, which feeds itself, and helps to regenerate the planet and our relations.
